Two young men were killed in separate incidents in Khulna within a span of around four hours on Wednesday evening and night, with both victims reportedly attacked with firearms and sharp weapons.
The incidents took place in areas under the jurisdiction of the Khulna Metropolitan Police’s Labanchara police station, leaving residents alarmed and raising concerns about security in the locality.
The first incident occurred at around 5:45pm in the Harintana area. The victim was identified as Md Manjurul Islam, 22. According to local sources, he was attacked near the Ashi Bigha culvert. The assailants allegedly stabbed him in the abdomen before shooting him in the left leg.
Local residents rescued Manjurul after the attack and rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead after he was taken to the hospital. The nature of the injuries suggests that the attack involved both a sharp weapon and a firearm, although the precise circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
A second killing was reported roughly four hours later. At around 9:45pm, Nazmul, 19, was allegedly shot and hacked to death in the Shishu Bagan Ashi Bigha area, which falls under Labanchara police station. After the attack, the assailants reportedly left his body at the scene and fled.
The two incidents, occurring within a relatively short period and involving similar types of violence, have caused considerable fear among residents. People in the surrounding areas have expressed concern over the apparent use of firearms and sharp weapons in attacks on young men.
Labanchara police station officer-in-charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain said police had recovered the bodies of the two young men from the area. One body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The second body will also be sent for a post-mortem examination after a team from the Criminal Investigation Department visits the scene and prepares the inquest report, the officer said.
Police have begun an investigation into both killings. Officers are working to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances and possible motives behind the attacks. Raids are also being conducted in an effort to locate and arrest the suspects.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two killings were connected. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances of each incident separately while gathering evidence from the crime scenes and speaking to witnesses.
The post-mortem examinations are expected to provide further information about the injuries sustained by the victims and help investigators establish the precise circumstances of their deaths. Police said their efforts to identify and arrest those involved would continue.
