Two separate incidents in the Bangladeshi capital have left a 10-year-old madrasa student and a 17-year-old boy dead after both were found hanging in different neighbourhoods on Saturday night, according to police. The deaths occurred in Hatirjheel and Hazaribagh, prompting investigations, while both bodies have been sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
In the first incident, police recovered the body of a child student, identified as Tahmidul Islam, aged 10, from the Hatirjheel area. He had been residing at the Al-Furqan Mosque Madrasa in the city’s Mohanagar Project area. A police officer from Hatirjheel Police Station said the child was taken to a nearby private hospital in the early hours of Sunday after being found in a hanging position inside the madrasa premises. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to information provided by the child’s father and shared by police, Tahmidul was the son of Shahin Reza from Kazipur village in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj district. He had been living at the madrasa as a residential student. Reports suggest he was found with a scarf-like cloth tied to a window grill, after which fellow students alerted authorities and rushed him to hospital.
Police have stated that the circumstances surrounding the death are not yet clear and require further examination. An officer involved in the case noted that there are grounds for suspicion, and the exact cause will be determined following the post-mortem report and a detailed investigation.
In a separate incident the same night, a teenager named Md Naim, aged 17, was found hanging in the Hazaribagh area of the capital. Police and hospital officials confirmed that he was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital shortly after being discovered and was declared dead by doctors around 1 a.m.
Family members said Naim was engaged in selling mangoes using a van alongside his father. His father, Abdul Mannan, explained that he had been away in a nearby lane at the time of the incident, while Naim remained near their rented home. When he returned during rainfall, he found the house locked from inside and his son’s van missing. After receiving no response despite repeated calls, he looked through a window and saw Naim hanging inside. Local residents later broke down the door and transported him to hospital.
Naim’s father said he had no understanding of what could have led to the incident. The teenager was the youngest of three siblings, originally from Chanpur village in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj district, and had been living with his family in Hazaribagh.
Police have confirmed that both bodies remain under post-mortem examination, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances of both deaths.
