A state-sponsored reception marking July Mass Uprising Day in Shariatpur has been overshadowed by allegations that two recognised July movement participants were assaulted and forcibly removed from the venue during the event. The accusations have been directed at several leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including Mahbub Morshed Tipu Madbar, General Secretary of Shariatpur Sadar Upazila BNP. The party, however, has rejected the allegations, insisting that no physical assault took place and that the incident was limited to a verbal confrontation before the individuals were escorted out.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Shariatpur Municipality Auditorium, where the district administration had organised a reception and discussion programme to commemorate July Mass Uprising Day. The event brought together members of families of those who lost their lives during the movement, July movement participants, representatives of various political parties, and members of civil society. District Commissioner Tahsina Begum presided over the programme.
Shortly after the incident, several videos circulated widely across social media, drawing significant public attention. The footage appeared to show a heated exchange between Mahbub Morshed Tipu Madbar, Zakir Hossain Mintu (known as Ador), who identifies himself as a July movement participant, and Imran Al Nazir, former convener of the Shariatpur district unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The argument reportedly escalated into pushing and shoving before the two men were removed from the venue. The videos quickly prompted widespread debate and differing interpretations online.
Zakir Hossain Mintu claimed he had been subjected to physical assault during the event. According to his account, a group of individuals had begun creating disorder even before the official programme started, insisting that there had been neither a July movement nor any recognised July fighters in Shariatpur. He alleged that after entering the venue, he was asked to identify himself and was then physically assaulted by Tipu Madbar before being forced to leave. Mintu condemned the incident and called for those responsible to face appropriate legal and administrative action.
Imran Al Nazir made similar allegations, stating that he and others had attended the state function following an official invitation from the District Commissioner. He claimed that several BNP activists attacked them, physically assaulted them and forcibly removed them from the auditorium. Nazir further alleged that the entire incident unfolded in the presence of administrative officials, yet no immediate or effective intervention was made to prevent or stop the confrontation.
Mahbub Morshed Tipu Madbar categorically denied the allegations. He argued that the BNP had played a significant role during the July movement and said this had been acknowledged by various political figures. According to him, Imran Al Nazir and several leaders associated with the National Citizen Party (NCP) had repeatedly made derogatory remarks about BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his family over an extended period. He claimed that similar comments were made during the programme, prompting him to protest. This, he said, led to a heated exchange between the two sides. To prevent the situation from escalating, those involved were escorted out of the venue. He maintained that no physical assault had taken place.
Members of the law enforcement agencies were present at the venue throughout the programme. However, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Tanvir Hossain declined to make an immediate comment regarding the allegations when approached by journalists.
District Commissioner Tahsina Begum said she had not witnessed any untoward incident during the official proceedings. She suggested that if any confrontation had occurred, it might have taken place before the formal programme began. According to her, the event concluded peacefully, and she said the administration would gather further information before making any detailed statement or deciding on any subsequent action.
July Mass Uprising Day was observed across Bangladesh through a series of state-sponsored commemorative programmes honouring those who lost their lives and those who participated in the movement. In Shariatpur, the district administration’s programme included a reception for the families of those killed during the uprising, recognition of July movement participants, and a discussion meeting reflecting on the significance of the events. The allegations surrounding the reception, however, have shifted attention away from the intended commemorative purpose and generated fresh political controversy.
As conflicting accounts continue to emerge from those involved, attention is now focused on whether the local administration or relevant authorities will launch an official inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether any further action is warranted.
