US Strikes Iran After Hormuz Shipping Escalation

Military tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified sharply following a series of confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz, with Washington claiming it has carried out coordinated strikes against around 140 Iranian military targets in response to an attack on a commercial vessel. At the same time, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for attacking another ship in the strategic waterway, fuelling fears of a broader regional conflict.

In a statement released on Saturday, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said fresh air and missile strikes were launched against multiple locations across Iran late on Saturday, United States time, corresponding to early Sunday in Bangladesh. According to the US military, the operation marks the third round of American strikes against Iranian targets within the past week, signalling a significant escalation in the confrontation between the two countries.

CENTCOM stated that the latest military action was authorised after an IRGC attack on a Cyprus-flagged commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The US military said the operation involved a combination of land-based and carrier-based combat aircraft, unmanned aerial systems and naval platforms, all employing precision-guided munitions against designated military objectives.

According to Washington, approximately 140 military sites were struck during the operation. The reported targets included missile and drone launch facilities, naval infrastructure, ammunition depots, military communications networks and coastal surveillance installations. US officials said these locations were selected because they form a critical part of Iran’s military capabilities and operational infrastructure.

Tehran has presented a different account of the incident. Iranian officials said the commercial vessel had failed to follow an authorised maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz and was therefore intercepted. Iran also announced the closure of the strategically vital waterway and warned that any retaliatory military action by foreign states would be met with a forceful response.

The situation escalated further when the IRGC claimed it had launched a second attack on another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, rendering it inoperable. The organisation also asserted that it had carried out attacks against US military installations in Jordan, Qatar and Oman in retaliation for recent American strikes. Those claims, including reports regarding the extent of any damage or casualties, had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. A substantial share of global seaborne crude oil exports, liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments and other commercial cargo passes through the narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption to navigation through the strait can have immediate consequences for global energy supplies, shipping costs and international trade.

Security analysts have long warned that even limited military incidents in the Strait of Hormuz carry the risk of triggering wider instability across the Middle East. Attacks on commercial shipping, threats to close the waterway and direct military exchanges between regional powers and the United States have historically heightened concerns over energy security and freedom of navigation.

The latest developments have prompted renewed international concern that the confrontation could spread beyond isolated military exchanges. Governments and diplomatic observers are closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation, amid fears that continued retaliation could undermine regional stability, disrupt international maritime transport and place additional pressure on global energy markets. While both Washington and Tehran continue to justify their actions as defensive measures, the risk of further escalation remains high as tensions across the Gulf region continue to mount.
