Veteran Freedom Fighter Dies in Kurigram Drowning

A tragic accident claimed the life of an elderly freedom fighter in Kurigram’s Chilmari Upazila on Sunday, leaving residents of the area in mourning. Mohammad Ali, an 80-year-old veteran of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, died after falling into water beside an embankment in Sarkarpara village under Romna Union during the afternoon of 12 July.

According to local residents, Mohammad Ali had been walking along an embankment in the village when he suddenly lost his balance and fell into water that had accumulated below. People nearby witnessed the incident and rushed to rescue him. Despite their swift efforts to pull him from the water, he was found to have died before he could be saved.

Family members and neighbours said the elderly freedom fighter had been suffering from several age-related health complications for a considerable period. His declining physical condition is believed to have contributed to the accident, with locals suggesting that he may have become unsteady while walking before slipping from the embankment. Although the circumstances point to an accidental fall, the exact cause of death will be established through the legal procedures followed in such cases.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information about the incident and began collecting evidence and statements from witnesses. Officers are treating the death as an apparent accident at this stage. In line with standard legal practice, preparations are underway to register an Unnatural Death (UD) case while the authorities continue to examine all relevant aspects of the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Nayan Kumar of Chilmari Model Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that police had been dispatched immediately after receiving the report. He said the necessary legal formalities would be completed and that investigators would review the circumstances surrounding the death before concluding the inquiry.

Mohammad Ali was widely respected in his community as a veteran freedom fighter who had played a significant role during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in 1971. Those who knew him described him as a humble, soft-spoken and sincere individual who maintained close ties with local residents throughout his life. His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from neighbours and well-wishers, many of whom remembered him for his modest lifestyle and dedication to his community.

The incident has also renewed discussion about the risks faced by elderly people, particularly those living with age-related illnesses or reduced mobility. Local residents observed that embankments and water bodies can become especially hazardous for older individuals, even during routine walks. They stressed that greater caution around such areas, along with assistance from family members or relatives for elderly and physically vulnerable people, could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The death of a respected freedom fighter under such unfortunate circumstances has deeply saddened the local community, serving as both a reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s veterans and the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of senior citizens in everyday life.
