Venezuela earthquake missing persons crisis deepens nationwide concern

A devastating earthquake in Venezuela has triggered growing alarm across the country as authorities report thousands of people still unaccounted for. An online platform established to track missing persons has so far registered 7,381 individuals as missing, according to data collated up to approximately 2:45 a.m. local time and later shared via social media. Officials believe many of those listed may be trapped beneath collapsed buildings and heavy debris scattered across affected regions.

Emergency response teams were deployed shortly after the tremors struck, launching rescue operations in multiple areas. However, efforts have been significantly hampered by disrupted communication networks and damaged infrastructure, making it difficult to assess the full scale of the disaster. In several regions, roads remain blocked, while power and mobile connectivity outages have further complicated coordination between emergency services and local authorities.

Families across the country have been left in anguish, searching hospitals, temporary shelters, and devastated neighbourhoods in the hope of locating missing relatives. Many have reported repeated journeys between overcrowded medical facilities and emergency centres, often receiving little or no confirmed information about the whereabouts of loved ones. Authorities have acknowledged the challenges and stated that search-and-rescue operations remain ongoing, with teams continuing to clear rubble in high-priority zones.

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has urged citizens to report any information regarding missing persons or damage to homes and infrastructure through the government’s official digital reporting system, VenApp. She emphasised that accurate and timely reporting is essential to improving the efficiency of rescue and relief efforts, particularly as teams attempt to prioritise the most severely affected areas.

The disaster, which struck on Wednesday in the form of two powerful earthquakes, has so far claimed at least 32 lives, with several hundred others injured. Officials have warned that the casualty figures are likely to rise significantly as access is restored to isolated communities and previously unreachable areas are assessed. Many of these locations are believed to have suffered severe structural damage.

International monitoring agencies have also raised concerns over the potential scale of the tragedy. Preliminary assessments from the United States Geological Survey suggest a wide-ranging impact, estimating that fatalities could eventually range between 10,000 and 100,000. Their analysis indicates a roughly 44 per cent probability that deaths could exceed 10,000, while there is an estimated 30 per cent chance that the toll could surpass 100,000 in the worst-case scenario.

Temporary shelters have been set up across multiple regions to accommodate displaced residents, many of whom have lost their homes or are unable to return due to structural risks. Local authorities, alongside volunteer groups, are working to distribute food, drinking water, and essential medical supplies. Despite these efforts, shortages persist in several locations, adding further strain to an already overwhelmed emergency response system.

As rescue operations continue, uncertainty remains widespread. With thousands still missing and access to many areas yet to be fully restored, concern is mounting that the full scale of the disaster has not yet been revealed.
