Vipers’ Power Hitters Wreak Havoc on Capitals!

The Desert Vipers began their ILT20 2025 campaign in spectacular fashion, defeating the reigning champions Dubai Capitals by four wickets in a thrilling opener. The star of the night was Andries Gous, whose rapid 36-ball 58 laid the platform for a comfortable chase, with Fakhar Zaman providing robust support at the top. The duo’s aggressive partnership in the powerplay left the Capitals reeling, and despite a mid-innings fightback, they could not defend 150 for eight.

From the first ball, the Vipers’ openers demonstrated their intent. In the fourth over, left-arm pacer Muhammad Jawadullah was hammered for 21 runs, including two fours and two sixes, highlighting the Capitals’ early vulnerability. Zaman continued the assault with a six off Mohammad Nabi in the following over but fell to the spinner’s bowling on the very next delivery. By this point, Gous and Zaman had already put on a formidable 50-run opening stand, wiping out a third of the target in under five overs and firmly putting the Vipers in control.

The Powerplay concluded at 64 for one in six overs, thanks in no small part to Gous hitting three successive boundaries off Scott Currie in the final over. While scoring slowed post-Powerplay, the Vipers remained ahead of the required run rate. The Capitals fought back after the strategic timeout, with Gulbadin Naib removing Max Holden, and Waqar Salamkheil taking a double-wicket over to dismiss Sam Curran and Gous. The momentum briefly shifted, but with just 42 runs needed from as many balls, the Vipers still had the upper hand.

Dan Lawrence and Shimron Hetmyer ensured the chase stayed on track, hitting boundaries to ease pressure. Currie removed Hetmyer, leaving 23 required from 30 balls. Haider Ali bowled economically, conceding only four runs in his over, keeping the Capitals in the contest. Currie’s subsequent over yielded just one run in four balls before he dismissed Hasan Nawaz. Khuzaima Tanveer struck a boundary off the very first ball, and he and Lawrence completed the remaining 14 runs over two overs, securing a confident four-wicket victory.

Earlier, the Vipers’ bowlers had already set the stage for the chase. Naseem Shah, Curran, Jordon Cox, and Tanveer reduced the Capitals to 42/4 by the seventh over. David Willey struggled for 22 balls to reach 10 runs before being dismissed by Noor Ahmad. Rovman Powell and Mohammad Nabi combined for 34 runs off 22 deliveries, nudging the Capitals just past 100 before Tanveer removed Powell. Nabi and Shanaka’s late blitz of 48 runs in the final five overs took the total to 150, which proved insufficient.

The Desert Vipers’ victory in the season opener was a statement of intent. Their balanced performance — explosive batting, disciplined bowling, and smart fielding — demonstrated they will be a formidable side in the 2025 ILT20 season. Fans left the stadium with plenty to talk about and much to anticipate as the tournament unfolds.
