An elderly inmate of Dhaka Central Jail, Abdul Matin, aged 75, passed away while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The man was brought to the hospital’s emergency department in an unconscious state around 11:30 pm on Tuesday, where doctors subsequently declared him dead.

Abdul Matin, whose father is Mirzan Ali, had been serving a prison sentence; however, the exact case for which he was incarcerated has not yet been disclosed. Prison officials have not provided details regarding his conviction or the duration of his imprisonment.

According to prison guard Mirza Harun, Matin’s health deteriorated suddenly during the night, prompting several guards to rush him to the hospital under instructions from the jail authorities. Upon arrival, doctors at the DMCH emergency department confirmed his death following a medical examination.

Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the inmate’s death, citing the attending physicians’ report. He stated that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted after completing inquest formalities in the presence of an executive magistrate. The body will be handed over to the family once all official procedures have been completed.

Authorities are following standard procedures in cases of prisoner deaths, including medical verification, inquest, and autopsy. Such steps are intended to confirm the cause of death and ensure transparency, particularly in cases involving elderly or ailing inmates.
