Lamine Yamal produced a landmark performance for Barcelona, scoring twice against Rayo Vallecano to help secure a 5–2 La Liga victory and, in the process, rewriting two significant records.
The 19-year-old forward had faced questions over his form after returning to club football following the World Cup. Expectations surrounding Yamal were exceptionally high, and his performances at the beginning of the season had not always matched the level supporters had come to expect from him. Against Rayo Vallecano, however, he provided an emphatic response.
Yamal opened the scoring in the 21st minute, giving Barcelona an early advantage. He then returned to the scoresheet in the 90th minute, netting Barcelona’s fifth goal of the match and completing his brace.
Raphinha also scored twice for Barcelona, while the remaining goal came through an own goal by Rayo Vallecano. Despite the contributions of several players, Yamal was the standout figure, with his two goals carrying particular historical significance.
The second goal took Yamal’s total for Barcelona across all competitions to 51. More significantly, his 50th goal had already placed him at the top of the age-based scoring record for Europe’s five leading domestic leagues.
Yamal reached 50 club goals at the age of 19 years and 49 days, making him the youngest player in the history of those leagues to reach the landmark. The previous record belonged to France international Kylian Mbappe, who achieved 50 club goals at 19 years and 241 days.
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland occupies third place on the list. He reached 50 club goals at 20 years and 196 days. Yamal’s achievement therefore places him ahead of two of the most prolific young forwards of the modern era.
His latest milestone is even more striking in the context of Barcelona’s own history. Yamal has become the youngest player to score 50 goals for the Catalan club, ending a record that had stood for 91 years.
The previous holder was Josep Escolà, who reached 50 goals for Barcelona at the age of 20 years and 356 days in 1935. His record remained untouched for more than nine decades before Yamal surpassed it at just 19.
The comparison with Lionel Messi adds another dimension to the achievement. Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Barcelona’s history, was 21 years and 120 days old when he reached 50 goals for the club. Yamal has therefore reached the same landmark considerably earlier than the Argentine great did.
Yamal’s record-breaking progress reflects how quickly his career has developed since emerging as one of Barcelona’s most exciting young talents. His ability to score while also contributing to the team’s attacking play has made him an increasingly influential figure at the club.
The victory over Rayo Vallecano could consequently prove important beyond the three points. After an inconsistent start to the campaign, Yamal delivered a decisive individual performance at a crucial stage, while his two goals added another remarkable chapter to his rapidly developing career.
At 19, he has already overtaken historic Barcelona figures in terms of the age at which he reached 50 goals. With 51 goals now to his name for the club, Yamal’s next challenge will be to sustain that level of production as he continues to establish himself among the leading young players in European football.
