A 20-year-old man has died following an attack reportedly linked to a boundary dispute in Kendua upazila of Netrokona, less than a week after returning to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia. His father, Enamul Haque, 45, was also seriously injured in the incident and remains under treatment in hospital, with relatives describing his condition as critical.
The attack took place at around 2 pm on Tuesday, 13 October, in Puranbari village under Roailbari Union of Kendua upazila.
According to police and local sources, a dispute over the boundary of a homestead had been ongoing between Enamul Haque and his cousin, Bokul Mia. The dispute reportedly escalated on Tuesday when people associated with Bokul allegedly attacked Enamul’s house with locally made weapons.
Both Enamul and his son, Abir Hossain, sustained serious injuries during the assault. Local residents rescued them and rushed them to Kendua Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment.
As their conditions were critical, doctors referred both patients to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care. Abir died while undergoing treatment at around 8 pm on Tuesday. His father remains hospitalised, and relatives have expressed concern about his condition.
Abir had returned from Saudi Arabia only about a week before the attack. His death so soon after coming home has left his family devastated and saddened residents of the village. What should have been a period of reunion with his family instead ended in tragedy.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the serious consequences that disputes over land and property boundaries can have when they escalate into violence. However, the precise circumstances of the attack, including the roles of those allegedly involved, will need to be established through a police investigation.
Confirming the incident, Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tariqul Islam said police had been deployed to the scene following the attack. He added that the situation was currently under control and that the necessary legal proceedings were under way.
No further details were immediately available regarding whether a formal case had been filed or anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident.
With Abir dead and his father seriously injured, the family is facing a devastating loss. The investigation will be crucial in establishing the circumstances surrounding the attack and determining responsibility in accordance with the law.
