In a significant disciplinary action, the central office of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) youth wing has expelled two local leaders from Banaripara Upazila in Barisal District for allegedly assaulting an Ayurvedic doctor after failing to extort money from him.
The announcement was made on Sunday, 15 February, through a formal notification signed by Minhajul Islam Bhuiya, co-secretary of the BNP Central Youth Office. The expelled leaders are Maksudur Rahman Dalim, Member Secretary of Baishari Union Youth League, and Rafiqul Malik, Senior Joint Convenor of the same unit.
Confirming the expulsions, Riaz Mridha, General Secretary of Banaripara Upazila BNP, stated that the disciplinary measures were taken following a thorough review of the incident and the leaders’ conduct.
According to the official notification, the two individuals were found guilty of violating party discipline, engaging in actions contrary to the organisation’s principles and ethos, and undermining party unity. Consequently, they have been expelled from the party, including the revocation of their primary membership. The statement also urged authorities to pursue legal proceedings against the accused.
The incident came to light after the Ayurvedic practitioner, Bibhash Rishi, lodged a complaint alleging that the two youth leaders attempted to demand money from him. When he refused, they allegedly attacked him on Friday, 13 February. A video of the assault quickly circulated on social media, sparking widespread criticism and calls for accountability.
The expulsions reflect the party leadership’s resolve to uphold organisational integrity and prevent misuse of influence by local cadres. Analysts suggest that such decisive action may be aimed at restoring public trust amid concerns over harassment and extortion by political affiliates.
