In a tragic incident at Kushtia’s Islamic University (IU), the head of the Department of Social Welfare and assistant professor, Asma Sadia Runa, was fatally stabbed in her office. The event, which has sent shockwaves through the university community, was confirmed by Dr Imam Hossain, the resident medical officer at Kushtia Sadar Hospital. Several students and departmental staff were reportedly present at the scene and immediately attempted to intervene.
According to police and university sources, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, around 4:00 PM in the office of the Department of Social Welfare, located within the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies building. The office also serves as the departmental chairperson’s room. At the time of the attack, Runa sustained severe stab wounds.
Reports indicate that Fazlur Rahman, a staff member from the Department of Political Science, was also found attempting self-harm in the same office. Quick action by students allowed both individuals to be rescued and initially treated at the university health centre before being transferred to Kushtia Sadar Hospital for further care.
University officials and IU Thana police promptly arrived at the scene, finding both victims in a critical condition. Despite medical intervention, Asma Sadia Runa was pronounced dead, while Fazlur Rahman remains in a critical state.
