Gary Kirsten Appointed Sri Lanka Head Coach

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially announced the appointment of the legendary South African opening batsman and World Cup-winning coach, Gary Kirsten, as the new head coach of the men’s national team. The announcement, made via a formal press release on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, marks a significant shift in the island nation’s cricketing strategy following a period of transitional turbulence.

Kirsten’s tenure is set to commence on 15 April 2026 under a two-year contract. He succeeds the iconic Sanath Jayasuriya, who stepped down from the role after Sri Lanka’s disappointing exit during the Super Eight stage of the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

A Vision for 2027

The SLC hierarchy has brought Kirsten on board with a specific mandate: to overhaul the High Performance Centre and architect a long-term resurgence. His primary objective is to prepare the “Lions” for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Kirsten’s intimate knowledge of South African conditions is viewed as a strategic masterstroke for a tournament held in his homeland.

A Pedigree of Excellence

Kirsten arrives with perhaps the most glittering coaching CV in the modern game. He famously guided India to their historic 2011 ODI World Cup title, ending a 28-year drought for the nation. Subsequently, he led South Africa from 2011 to 2013, a period during which the Proteas achieved the rare feat of reaching the No. 1 ranking across all three formats of the game simultaneously.

Before accepting the Sri Lankan post, Kirsten served as a consultant for Namibia during the last T20 World Cup, showcasing his ability to develop emerging cricketing talent.
