Five Arrested Following Assault on RAB Personnel

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) has apprehended five individuals in connection with a violent assault on three of its intelligence members in Nabinagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria. The arrests were made during a series of coordinated raids conducted between midnight on Monday and Tuesday morning in Khagatua village, located within the Ratanpur Union.

According to a formal press release issued by the Brahmanbaria office of RAB-9, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon around 4:00 pm. A four-member intelligence team from RAB-9 was travelling through Nabinagar toward Bancharampur for the purpose of information gathering.

During their transit through Khagatua village, the team was ambushed by a notorious local criminal, Shafiq Miah, and his organised gang. The assailants launched a sudden attack, resulting in severe injuries to three RAB personnel. Following the assault, other members of the elite force, with the assistance of local residents, rescued the injured officers. They were initially transported to the Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex for primary care and have since been moved to Brahmanbaria General Hospital for further medical treatment.

The arrests were confirmed by the Company Commander of RAB-9 Brahmanbaria, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md. Nuranabi, during a press briefing held at the district headquarters in Sarkarpara at 1:30 pm on Tuesday. The individuals taken into custody are all residents of Khagatua village.

Criminal Background of the Fugitives

While five suspects are in custody, the primary mastermind, Shafiq Miah (known locally as Shafiq Dakat), and his close associate, Abdul Halim (34), managed to evade capture and flee the area. Shafiq Miah is identified as a top-tier criminal with a significant history of violence.

Official records indicate that Shafiq Miah faces at least 15 pending criminal cases involving various grave offences, including:

  • Armed robbery (dacoity)

  • Murder

  • Assaults on police personnel

  • Rape

  • Narcotics-related crimes

It was further noted that the gang led by Shafiq has a history of targeting law enforcement, having previously launched two separate attacks on members of the Nabinagar Police Station.

ASP Md. Nuranabi stated that a formal case is currently being processed at the Nabinagar Police Station. Law enforcement intends to charge between 10 and 11 individuals in connection with this specific assault. The five detainees currently remain in RAB custody but are scheduled to be handed over to the local police shortly. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to apprehending the remaining fugitives, including Shafiq Miah, as operations in the region continue.
