Persistent Monsoon Depressions Spell Five Days of Heavy Bangladesh Rainfall

A clear low-pressure area over the north-western Bay of Bengal and its adjacent coastal regions has intensified into a monsoon depression. This meteorological shift is set to trigger a prolonged spell of inclement weather across Bangladesh. According to an official bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday (5 July), the system will bring gusty winds and widespread rainfall to all eight administrative divisions, including the capital city of Dhaka, over the next five days.

The comprehensive weather warning, signed by meteorologist Mohammad Tariful Newaz Kabir, indicates that the intensification of this depression has significantly bolstered the active monsoon over the region. Consequently, various parts of the country are highly likely to experience everything from light showers to isolated instances of moderately heavy to exceptionally heavy downpours.

Twenty-Four Hour Outlook and Temperature Declines

For the initial 24 hours starting Sunday evening, the weather office predicts light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty winds and frequent lightning strikes across most districts within the Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions. Similar weather conditions will affect many areas across the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions.

Severe Weather Warning: The BMD has explicitly warned that regional areas within the Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions face an imminent risk of moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall. This concentrated precipitation is expected to cause a slight drop in both day and night temperatures across the entire country.

Extended Forecast Spanning the Working Week

The meteorological forecast remains consistently wet as the week progresses. From Monday (6 July) evening through to Tuesday evening, the monsoon axis is expected to strengthen further. This will result in rain or thunder showers covering the vast majority of places across all eight divisions. The threat of localised inundation remains high, as moderately heavy to very heavy downpours are anticipated nationwide, though temperatures during this specific 24-hour window are expected to remain largely unchanged.

A similar pattern will persist from Tuesday (7 July) evening into Wednesday, with widespread rain and gusty conditions continuing to dominate the country’s weather profile. While nighttime temperatures are expected to hold steady during this period, daytime temperatures may register another minor drop due to the lack of sunshine and constant cloud cover.

Gradual Easing of the Monsoon System

Looking further ahead toward the latter half of the week, the outlook offers little immediate respite. Between Wednesday (8 July) and Thursday (9 July) evening, the high probability of rain, gusty winds, and lightning strikes will stay uniform across almost all divisions, accompanied by heavy falls in scattered areas.

By Thursday evening and into Friday, a marginal shift in the system’s trajectory is expected to bring a slight variation in distribution. Most places in Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet will continue to see active rainfall, whereas the coverage might drop to ‘many places’ across the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions. Fortunately for the waterlogged nation, the BMD has noted that this extensive rainy spell is projected to gradually lose its intensity and subside after the completion of the five-day cycle.
