Veteran Awami League leader, Liberation War veteran and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has died while undergoing medical treatment. He was 83 years old.

He died at approximately 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday at Square Hospital in the capital, Dhaka, according to Jubo League leader Niaz Morshed Elite.

Following the political changes after the July 2024 movement and the fall of the Awami League government, Mosharraf Hossain was arrested on 27 October that year from the Vatara area of Dhaka. He was subsequently taken to Chattogram Central Jail.

In 2025, on 5 August, he became critically ill while in prison and was admitted from the prison hospital to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital. He was later released on bail on 14 August 2025.

Mosharraf Hossain was one of the members involved in the framing of the 1972 Constitution of Bangladesh. He was elected Member of Parliament six times from the Mirsarai constituency of Chattogram as an Awami League candidate in the general elections of 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018. He remained a member of the party’s presidium until his death.

He served as Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism during the 1996–2001 Awami League government. He later held the portfolio of Minister for Housing and Public Works during the same period. He again served as Minister for Housing and Public Works in the 2014–2019 Awami League government.

Born on 12 January 1943 in Dhum village of Mirsarai upazila in Chattogram, he completed his matriculation from Chittagong Collegiate School and higher secondary education from Sir Ashutosh Government College. He later obtained a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. Following his entry into politics, he became widely known with the honorific “Engineer” attached to his name.

His father, S. Rahman, was a member of the provincial council in the 1960s. After the Partition, he moved to Chattogram and established a construction business under the name “Orient Builders Corporation.”

During his studies in Lahore, Mosharraf Hossain was involved in the Six-Point Movement and served as president of the East Pakistan Students’ Union. After returning to East Pakistan, he joined the Awami League and was elected to the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly in 1970. During the Liberation War of 1971, he served as Sub-Sector Commander of Sector 1 and led several key operations.
