Three Church Leaders Killed Manipur

Three prominent church leaders were killed and at least five others injured in a brutal armed attack in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur on Wednesday, triggering widespread unrest, road blockades, and renewed concerns over fragile security in the region.

The incident occurred in the Kangpokpi district, where unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy carrying members of a Christian delegation returning from a conference. The attack has been widely condemned by civil society groups and religious organisations, while authorities have intensified security operations amid escalating tensions.

According to preliminary reports, the victims had attended a Thadou Baptist Association meeting in Lamka, Churachandpur district, before travelling back in two vehicles. While crossing a remote stretch of road, suspected armed assailants opened indiscriminate fire, killing three church leaders on the spot and critically injuring several others.

The deceased have been identified as senior figures of the Thadou Baptist Association and the Manipur Baptist Convention, including Reverend V. Sitlhou, former General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention, Reverend V. Kaigolun, and Pastor Paogolen.

Among the injured are Reverend S.M. Hawpu, Reverend Hekai Simte, and three others, all of whom are undergoing treatment in hospital facilities in serious condition. Medical officials have warned that some remain in critical condition.

Local reactions have been swift and intense. The Kuki Students’ Organisation called an indefinite strike beginning Wednesday afternoon, condemning the killings as a “cowardly and barbaric act” and accusing security agencies of failing to protect civilians. The group has, however, exempted essential services such as healthcare, media operations, and religious activities from the shutdown.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur also issued a strong condemnation, stating that Reverend Sitlhou had recently been engaged in peace-related initiatives involving inter-church dialogue efforts in neighbouring regions. His killing, they said, represents a direct blow to ongoing reconciliation processes.

In response to the violence, protesters blocked National Highway 2, a vital transport artery in the region, leading to disruptions in movement of goods and passengers. Authorities have since reinforced security deployments across sensitive zones to prevent further escalation.
