Two individuals have died and another teenage girl has been injured following a boat capsize incident in Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona, where they had gone to visit relatives. The incident occurred on Monday at around 4:30 pm in Chikni Beel, located in Bisham Baspur village under Bishkakuni Union.
According to local residents and police sources, the deceased are Jamila Khatun (30), wife of Mansur Ali from Kolhari village in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh, and Nusrat Akter (8), daughter of Abu Taher from Hasanpur village in Gauripur upazila. The two were related as aunt and niece. The injured teenager has been identified as Mimu Akter (12), daughter of Asmat Ali from Bisham Baspur village in Purbadhala upazila.
It is reported that Md Hossain Mia, a resident of Kolhari village in Tarakanda, visited his in-laws’ home in Bisham Baspur village, Purbadhala, on Sunday evening in observance of the Eid holiday. He was accompanied by several relatives, including his elder sister Jamila Khatun and his niece Nusrat Akter, among others.
On the following day, at around 4:30 pm, six individuals set out for a boat trip on a small wooden dinghy in the nearby Chikni Beel. It is stated that the vessel became overloaded with passengers. As a result, the boat lost balance and capsized in the water.
Three of the passengers managed to swim safely to shore, while Jamila Khatun, Nusrat Akter and Mimu Akter struggled in the water. Local residents subsequently rescued them from the beel and transported them to Purbadhala Upazila Health Complex in the evening. On duty, medical personnel declared Jamila Khatun and Nusrat Akter dead.

Police stated that the incident is believed to have occurred due to overloading of the boat. Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sajal Kumar Sarkar said that initial findings suggest excessive passenger load as the cause of the accident. He further confirmed that legal procedures in connection with the incident are underway.
The injured Mimu Akter is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
