Violence Erupts in Shariatpur Hospital

A violent incident at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital has left a physician seriously injured and caused significant damage to the emergency department after the death of a heart patient triggered an angry response from relatives.

According to hospital authorities, a 50-year-old man, Lal Mia Kazi of North Bilashkhan in Shariatpur municipality, was admitted to the emergency unit on Friday night at around 10:00 pm after complaining of severe chest pain. Medical staff on duty provided initial treatment and stabilisation measures. However, his condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:30 am.

Following the patient’s death, relatives alleged delays in the doctor’s response and treatment, which quickly escalated into violence. Witnesses and hospital sources reported that a group of agitated family members vandalised the emergency department before turning their aggression towards the attending physician, Dr Nasir Islam.

CCTV footage reportedly shows a large group of approximately 20 to 25 individuals assaulting Dr Islam inside the emergency unit and forcibly dragging him outside the room. The footage further indicates that he attempted to escape but was pursued and beaten outside the hospital building, leaving him critically injured.

Police arrived shortly after receiving information about the incident and rescued the injured doctor from the scene. He was initially treated at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital before being transferred to a private facility in the district town due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities have confirmed that preparations are underway to move him to Dhaka for advanced medical care.

One individual, identified as Al Amin, was detained at the hospital in connection with the attack, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved.

Senior officials, including a Member of Parliament for Shariatpur-1, the Deputy Commissioner, and the Superintendent of Police, visited the hospital following the incident. Authorities have strongly condemned the attack and promised strict legal action.
