Storm Warning Issued for Southern Regions

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rain accompanied by gusty or squally winds in parts of the country’s southern region and issued a warning for several river ports.

According to a weather bulletin released on Saturday (30 May), the warning will remain in effect from 3:00 pm until 1:00 am for designated river ports. The BMD stated that the regions of Khulna, Barishal and Patuakhali may experience gusty or squally winds blowing from the west or north-west at speeds ranging between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour. Temporary rain or thundershowers may also occur in these areas during the warning period.

In light of the forecast, river ports in the affected regions have been advised to display Local Cautionary Signal No. 1 (re-hoisted). The weather office has also urged vessels operating in these areas to navigate with caution due to the possibility of adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and rainfall.

The bulletin further indicated that, from 9:00 am on Saturday and over the following 24 hours, a few places in the Chattogram Division and one or two locations in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

In addition, moderate to moderately heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations within the Chattogram Division during the same forecast period.

Weather observations released by the department showed that the country’s lowest temperature on Saturday was recorded in Rajshahi at 21.5 degrees Celsius. In Dhaka, winds were blowing from the south and south-east at speeds of 8 to 12 kilometres per hour.

At 6:00 am, the relative humidity in the capital stood at 89 per cent. Rainfall data for the preceding 24 hours up to 6:00 am showed that Gopalganj recorded the highest amount of precipitation in the country, with 39 millimetres of rainfall.

The meteorological bulletin also provided astronomical information for the capital. Sunset in Dhaka was scheduled for 6:41 pm on Saturday, while sunrise on the following day was expected at 5:11 am.
