The principal suspect, Sohel Rana, and his wife, Swapna, have been brought to court from prison to attend their indictment hearing regarding the rape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old child in the capital’s Pallabi area.
High-Security Arrival at Court Premises
The suspects arrived at the court premises under tight security inside a prison van at approximately 07:45 BST on Monday, 1 June 2026. Following their arrival, Sohel Rana was placed inside the detention facility of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, while his wife, Swapna, was escorted to the separate female detention unit.
The framing of charges against the accused is scheduled to proceed today before the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal. Ripon Molla, the court in-charge of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, confirmed the presence of the suspects. He stated that the accused had been secured within the court lock-up and would be presented before the bench as soon as judicial directives were issued.
Case Timeline and Sequence of Events
The legal proceedings stem from an incident on 19 May 2026, when law enforcement officials recovered the dismembered body of the eight-year-old victim from a third-floor flat in Pallabi at around 11:30 BST. Immediately after the discovery, the primary accused, Sohel Rana, evaded initial capture by breaking the window grill of the flat’s restroom and fleeing the scene. However, police officers detained his wife, Swapna, inside the apartment at that time.
Following a coordinated search operation, police arrested Sohel Rana later that evening in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj. The victim’s father initiated formal legal proceedings by filing a case at Pallabi Police Station the morning after the incident.
On the afternoon of 20 May 2026, Sohel Rana was produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid, where he gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, admitting to the rape and subsequent murder of the child. Notably, the law enforcement authorities completed their investigation and submitted the formal charge sheet within a span of five days, on 25 May 2026.
