Following a 3–0 defeat against India, the Bangladesh women’s football team are experiencing a difficult phase emotionally and competitively in their SAFF Championship campaign. The loss is particularly significant given that Bangladesh had defeated India 3–0 and 3–1 in the previous two editions of the tournament, making the recent result a setback in their pursuit of a third consecutive SAFF title.
As a consequence of this result, Bangladesh finished as group runners-up and are now set to face Nepal in the semi-final on 3 June. The fixture will determine their progression in the tournament and remains a key opportunity to recover from the recent defeat.
In Goa, the team did not conduct a full training session on the day following the match. Instead, the players participated in a recovery session, which is standard practice after competitive fixtures to aid physical recovery and reduce fatigue. During this period, players did not engage directly with the media. However, an official statement was released to journalists through the Bangladesh Football Federation’s media department, featuring comments from goalkeeping coach Masud Ahmed.
Reflecting on the performance against India, he acknowledged that the team did not execute the planned approach effectively. He stated, “We couldn’t play yesterday’s match as planned. Many of the players did well with the plan we gave them individually, while others were not successful. If you can’t perform all departments together against a team like India, you will definitely get punished, which we did.”
His remarks highlighted that while some players were able to follow individual tactical instructions, consistency across all areas of play was lacking, which ultimately affected the result.
Attention has now shifted to the semi-final against Nepal. The coaching staff have begun reviewing the issues identified in the previous match and are working on corrective measures. According to Masud Ahmed, discussions are ongoing with the players in order to address shortcomings and prepare for the upcoming fixture. He added, “We are talking to the players. We are working on how to resolve the issues. Hopefully, the girls will turn things around in the Nepal match.”
A key focus for the team management is restoring the players’ confidence and ensuring they return to their usual performance levels. This includes analysing major errors from the previous match and reinforcing tactical discipline. Masud Ahmed further stated,”We will try to show the girls the big mistakes. We will also discuss how to overcome them. We are trying to mentally strengthen each player so that they can return to their normal game.”
There was also concern regarding goalkeeper Mili Akter, who sustained a head injury during the previous match. However, the coaching staff have confirmed that the injury is not serious. According to Masud Ahmed, she is expected to be available for selection in the upcoming semi-final.
Overall, the Bangladesh team camp in Goa is currently focused on recovery, tactical correction, and mental preparation ahead of the semi-final against Nepal, with the aim of responding positively after the defeat to India.
