Tofail Ahmed’s Final Resting Place

Preparations have begun in Bhola for the burial of veteran politician, Liberation War organiser, and prominent national leader Tofail Ahmed, in accordance with a long-expressed personal wish to be laid to rest beside his parents in the family graveyard.

On Tuesday morning, grave-digging commenced at the family cemetery in Koralia village under South Dighaldi Union of Bhola Sadar Upazila. Family members confirmed that Tofail Ahmed had repeatedly conveyed his desire during his lifetime to be buried alongside his late father, Azhar Ali, and mother, Fatema Khanam. Respecting that wish, relatives have arranged for his burial at the same site.

According to the burial schedule announced by the family, the first funeral prayer is set to take place at Bhola Government High School ground on Tuesday afternoon. A second funeral prayer will then be held in front of his ancestral home later in the day. Following the completion of both services, he will be interred at the family graveyard in Koralia village.

The responsibility for preparing the grave has been entrusted to 70-year-old Abu Taher, a long-serving grave digger who has spent decades carrying out similar duties in the area. Abu Taher said that he has dug more than one hundred graves during his lifetime and has maintained a longstanding connection with the Ahmed family. Previously, he prepared the graves of Tofail Ahmed’s father Azhar Ali, mother Fatema Khanam, wife Anwara Begum, and several other relatives.

Reflecting on the task, Abu Taher described it as a significant experience to be entrusted with the burial preparations of one of Bangladesh’s most recognised political figures. He also recalled his earlier involvement in the funerals of several members of the family, noting the continuity of that relationship over many years.

Mohammad Rakibul Islam, a nephew of Tofail Ahmed, said the family had long been aware of his uncle’s wish to rest beside his parents. He added that the decision to prepare the grave at the family cemetery was taken specifically to fulfil that final request.

Tofail Ahmed occupied a significant place in Bangladesh’s political history. He was widely recognised for his involvement in the 1969 Mass Uprising and for his role during the country’s Liberation War. Over a political career spanning several decades, he served in a number of important leadership positions and remained a familiar figure in national politics.

Beyond his public life, those close to him often described him as a man deeply connected to his family and ancestral roots. His wish to be buried beside his parents reflected that attachment. With arrangements now underway in Bhola, family members are preparing to honour a final request that linked one of the country’s veteran political leaders to the place and people who shaped his earliest years.

The burial beside his parents brings a personal dimension to the conclusion of a long public life, underscoring the enduring significance of family ties and heritage even for figures whose careers were defined on the national stage.
