A former student leader affiliated with the banned student wing of the Awami League was detained by police after being identified while attending his final-year master’s viva examination at Rajshahi College.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 11:30 am in front of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at Rajshahi College. According to witnesses, students present on campus recognised the individual and alerted authorities, leading to his detention and subsequent handover to police.
The detained man has been identified as 24-year-old Sajib Ali, son of Muzammel Haque, and a resident of Char Shyampur village in the Shah Makhdum area of Rajshahi city. He was previously known as the former president of the student wing committee of Ward No. 9 under Katakhali Municipality.
Reports indicate that Sajib Ali is a final-year master’s student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at the college. He had arrived on campus to sit for his scheduled viva voce examination when a group of students identified him. The recognition quickly escalated, and he was detained from the department premises before being handed over to law enforcement.
Police confirmed that he has been taken into custody and is currently being interrogated. Authorities stated that further action will be determined after verification of relevant information and completion of initial questioning. Officers also added that legal procedures are being followed in accordance with standard protocol.
The arrest briefly created tension within the campus environment. A number of students gathered near the department following the incident, raising concerns and demands for clarity over the situation. However, the situation did not escalate further, and calm was restored within a short period of time as police maintained their presence and university authorities worked to ease the atmosphere.
Student politics in Bangladesh has long been a sensitive issue, particularly where former leaders of affiliated organisations are concerned. Incidents involving past activists often draw heightened attention on university campuses, where political affiliations can intersect with academic life.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any formal charges have been filed in connection with the detention. Further updates are expected once the ongoing investigation progresses.
