Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has added another significant achievement to his growing sporting portfolio with the inauguration of a new international-standard cricket stadium in the United States. Best known for his success in cinema, Khan has also established himself as a prominent figure in franchise cricket through the Knight Riders group, which has now reached a historic milestone by developing and operating its first international-standard cricket venue outside its home country.
The newly built stadium is situated within the Fairplex complex in Pomona, California, and will serve as the home ground of the Los Angeles Knight Riders, the franchise owned by Shah Rukh Khan that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC). The venue was officially unveiled through a video message released on 1 July.
Speaking during the inauguration, Khan described the occasion as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. He said that what had once been a dream had finally become reality, adding that bringing cricket—the world’s second most-watched sport—to Los Angeles represented a historic moment for everyone involved. He also praised the long-term partnership between Fairplex and the Knight Riders organisation, saying the project had created far more than a sporting venue.
According to Khan, the stadium has been designed as a community destination where people can gather to enjoy sport, entertainment and shared experiences. He expressed hope that it would become a permanent home for cricket in Los Angeles while inspiring younger generations to embrace the game and contribute to its future growth in the United States.
The stadium has been constructed to international specifications and includes eight wickets on the main square, playing field dimensions that meet International Cricket Council standards, and six floodlight towers standing 120 feet tall to support day-night matches. More than 32,000 metric tonnes of earth were excavated during construction, highlighting the scale of the development.
Venky Mysore, Chief Executive Officer of Knight Riders Sports, described the project as much more than a stadium. He said it symbolised the organisation’s long-term vision for the future of cricket and marked a proud achievement as the first global cricket brand to establish an international-standard cricket stadium of its own.
The development reflects the Knight Riders group’s broader ambition to expand cricket’s footprint beyond its traditional markets. While the sport has long enjoyed immense popularity across South Asia, the Caribbean, Australia and parts of the United Kingdom, the United States has emerged as one of cricket’s fastest-growing markets in recent years. The launch of Major League Cricket and increasing investment in professional infrastructure are widely viewed as important steps towards establishing the sport in North America ahead of cricket’s return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
The Knight Riders group has steadily expanded its global presence through multiple franchise leagues. Its portfolio currently includes the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20, and Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket. Across these competitions, the Knight Riders franchises have collectively secured nine major championship titles, reinforcing the group’s reputation as one of the most successful and influential organisations in franchise cricket.
The opening of the Pomona stadium therefore represents not only a significant investment in sporting infrastructure but also another step in the continued international expansion of cricket, with the Knight Riders aiming to help establish the game on one of the world’s largest sporting stages.
