Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after his country’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver. The result not only confirmed Algeria’s exit from the tournament but also marked the final international appearance of one of the nation’s most accomplished footballers.
Speaking to beIN Sports after the match, the 35-year-old winger confirmed that he had played his last game for the national team.
“This was my last match for the national team,” Mahrez said following the defeat.
His announcement brings the curtain down on a distinguished 12-year international career during which he established himself as one of Algeria’s most influential players and a consistent leader on the pitch.
Mahrez made his senior debut for Algeria against Armenia in 2014 and went on to become a central figure in the team’s attacking play. Over the course of 119 international appearances, the former Leicester City and Manchester City winger scored 40 goals and provided 45 assists, underlining both his finishing ability and his creativity.
Even in his final World Cup campaign, Mahrez continued to make a meaningful contribution. He scored two goals and registered one assist during the tournament, although his performances were ultimately not enough to help Algeria progress beyond the stage where they were eliminated by Switzerland.
Widely recognised for his close control, technical quality and composure in possession, Mahrez enjoyed an outstanding club career alongside his international success. He was a key member of Leicester City’s historic Premier League title-winning side before moving to Manchester City, where he collected multiple domestic honours and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most effective wide players.
His retirement from international football marks the end of an era for Algerian football. Over more than a decade, Mahrez evolved from an emerging talent into the team’s captain, carrying significant responsibility both on and off the field. His leadership, experience and attacking quality made him one of the country’s most important players throughout his international career.
Although Mahrez has now stepped away from representing Algeria, his contribution to the national side leaves a lasting legacy. With 119 caps, 40 international goals and 45 assists, he departs as one of the most productive and respected players ever to wear the Algerian shirt, closing a memorable chapter in the nation’s football history.
