A member of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) has been arrested with a firearm during a joint security operation in the remote Thanchi upazila of Bandarban, as law enforcement agencies continue their campaign against armed groups operating in the Chattogram Hill Tracts.
The arrest was made on the morning of Saturday, 4 July, during an operation in the Sherkar Para area of Thanchi. According to security officials, the suspect was identified as Jouthan Bom, 52, a resident of Sherkar Para village under Ward No. 9 of Sadar Union and the son of Lalpian Bom.
Local sources and police said the joint forces had been conducting operations across the rugged and difficult terrain of Thanchi for the past three days as part of ongoing efforts to locate armed militants and recover illegal weapons. During the latest raid, personnel apprehended Jouthan Bom while he was allegedly in possession of a firearm. He was later handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
Confirming the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police Farhad Sardar said the Bangladesh Army detained the suspect during the operation in the remote hill region before transferring him to the police. He added that preparations were underway to file a case against the accused under the Arms Act.
The latest arrest comes amid continued security operations in parts of Bandarban where law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle the activities of armed groups. Authorities have been carrying out coordinated drives in several remote areas to recover illegal weapons, prevent militant activities and strengthen public security.
The mountainous terrain of Thanchi and neighbouring upazilas has long presented operational challenges for security forces because of its dense forests and difficult accessibility. Officials say sustained joint operations are intended to curb the movement of armed groups and reinforce law and order in the region.
Police have not disclosed further details about the firearm recovered or whether additional suspects are being sought as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities indicated that legal action against the arrested individual will proceed in accordance with existing laws while investigations continue.
