US Troop Withdrawal Sparks Debate Over Nigeria Mission

US Troop Withdrawal Sparks Debate Over Nigeria Mission

The United States has withdrawn most of the troops it deployed to Nigeria earlier this year to support operations against Islamist militant groups, declaring the mission a success. Nigerian military officials, however, insist the departure of American forces will not weaken ongoing counterterrorism efforts, highlighting a contrasting assessment of the operation’s impact.

The joint military campaign began in December in the Lake Chad Basin, a region that has long served as a stronghold for extremist organisations operating across parts of Nigeria and neighbouring countries. The operation was launched with air strikes against militant targets on Christmas Day, followed by the deployment of approximately 200 US troops nearly two months later to assist Nigerian forces.

According to the US military, the months-long operation achieved several key objectives, including the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as one of the senior leaders of the Islamic State (IS). During a military briefing on Thursday, US officials said the mission had fulfilled its strategic goals and significantly disrupted the group’s leadership structure.

Despite Washington’s assessment, Nigeria has sought to reassure the public that the withdrawal of US troops will not affect military operations. Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Nigerian armed forces said the departure of American personnel would “not in any way slow down” Nigeria’s campaign against extremist groups.

Although the joint operation has formally concluded, security cooperation between the two countries is set to continue. Nigerian Major General Michael Onojo and the US military have both confirmed that intelligence sharing and broader defence collaboration will remain in place. Nigerian military spokesman Major General Samaila Uba also confirmed that US military advisers who had been stationed in the country before the deployment of the special task force will continue their work.

The recent expansion of military cooperation followed growing political pressure from Washington. US officials had previously criticised the Nigerian authorities for failing to adequately protect vulnerable communities from Islamist insurgents. US President Donald Trump and some political figures in the United States also claimed that a “Christian genocide” was taking place in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has consistently rejected those allegations, arguing that the country’s violence is complex and affects people from all religious communities. Officials maintain that the conflict is driven by multiple security challenges rather than the targeted persecution of a single religious group.

Data collected by independent organisations monitoring political violence broadly support that position. Their findings indicate that many of those killed or injured in attacks carried out by jihadist groups are Muslims, as the militants primarily operate in northern Nigeria, where the Muslim population forms the majority.

Announcing the troop withdrawal, General Dagvin Anderson, commander of the US Air Force in Africa, said the joint operation had substantially weakened IS leadership in Nigeria. He added that the campaign disrupted communication between local commanders and the group’s wider international network, significantly reducing its operational effectiveness.

Security analysts say the Islamic State has shifted much of its strategic focus towards sub-Saharan Africa in recent years. They estimate that nearly 90 per cent of the group’s attacks worldwide now occur across the region, with its Nigerian affiliate regarded as one of the organisation’s most active and dangerous branches.

Nigeria, the most populous country in West Africa, continues to face an array of security threats. Alongside Islamist insurgencies in the north-east, armed bandit groups, kidnappers and organised criminal networks have expanded their activities beyond northern states into central and southern parts of the country. Those overlapping challenges continue to test the capacity of Nigeria’s security forces, even as international military support enters a new phase.
