Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has issued a direct and highly controversial threat targeting Iran’s remaining political and religious leadership. Katz asserted that Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was assassinated precisely because he was orchestrating an overarching strategic plan to eliminate the state of Israel. Issuing a stern warning, the defence minister stated that any Iranian leader attempting to revive or execute similar cross-border operations would face an identical fate.
The provocative declarations were broadcast on Monday, 6 July, by Israel’s television Channel 13. Crucially, Katz delivered his remarks while millions of mourners were taking to the streets of Tehran for Khamenei’s official funeral procession. The timing of the comments has added substantial fuel to an already volatile geopolitical climate in the Middle East.
Reaffirming Tel Aviv’s uncompromising stance on national security, Katz added that the Israeli military is fully prepared to defend the nation against any impending threats, regardless of the timing or origin. This is not the first time the defence minister has singled out high-ranking Iranian figures. He previously designated Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader, as a primary target for assassination. That statement drew fierce condemnation from official quarters in Tehran, escalating diplomatic friction.
The reaction from Iran was immediate and combative. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a sharp counter-warning, placing the responsibility squarely on Washington. Araghchi stated that it is the explicit duty of United States President Donald Trump to rein in Tel Aviv’s aggressive posturing. He warned that any kinetic actions or threats aimed at the Iranian populace or its leadership would trigger an instantaneous, precise, and severe military retaliation.
International diplomatic observers have expressed deep concern over this latest war of words. As Iran navigates a highly sensitive period of internal transition following the death of its Supreme Leader, the explicit threats of targeted killings from Israel risk pushing the region into an uncontainable, full-scale military confrontation.
