A massive sea of mourners filled the iconic Azadi Street in Tehran on Monday, 6 July, as millions of Iranians gathered to pay their final respects to Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A profound sense of grief enveloped the capital. Mourners began converging on the central thoroughfare from various neighbourhoods well before dawn, creating an unprecedented gridlock of humanity that stretched across several kilometres.
A heavily adorned truck carrying the coffin of the late leader moved at a snail’s pace through the dense, emotional crowd. The procession carried an additional layer of tragedy, as the same vehicle bore the caskets of several of his immediate family members. Alongside the former Supreme Leader, the bodies of his daughter, his three-year-old granddaughter, his son-in-law, and his daughter-in-law were also being transported, following an event that claimed their lives simultaneously. Mourners chanted traditional elegies and waved state flags, turning the streets into a collective expression of national mourning.
The Tehran leg of the funeral procession is scheduled to reach its conclusion at the historic Azadi Square. However, the final interment will involve an extended journey reflecting deep cross-border religious traditions. Following the initial ceremonies in the Iranian capital, the caskets will be transported to neighbouring Iraq over the coming days. The bodies will be taken to the holy Shia cities of Najaf and Karbala, where extensive religious rituals and commemorative prayers will be conducted by senior clerics.
Once the traditional honours are completed in Iraq, the remains will be repatriated to Iran. The final burial is slated to take place in Mashhad, Iran’s holiest city and home to the shrine of Imam Reza, fulfilling spiritual protocols for one of the country’s most influential historical figures.
