Kashmir Activist Asks India for Help Amid Food Shortage

A prominent activist leader in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has issued a dramatic plea to New Delhi for urgent humanitarian intervention, citing an economic blockade and a violent crackdown on civil demonstrators by Islamabad. Sardar Aman Khan, a leading figure within the grassroots Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), called for closer diplomatic and economic ties with India. The appeal follows allegations that Pakistani authorities have deliberately halted rations and essential medical supplies to suppress regional protests.

Khan urged the Indian government to coordinate emergency relief operations and demanded the immediate reopening of the Line of Control (LoC). He argued that if internal security conditions continue to slide, local residents must be granted safe passage to cross the border into India for safety.

Severe Shortages and Escalating Protests

In a video circulating widely across social media platforms, Khan can be seen addressing the mounting humanitarian crisis. He stated plainly that the region desperately requires Indian assistance due to an acute food crisis, emphasizing that cross-border help is urgently needed. According to the JAAC leadership, the aggressive measures deployed by federal security forces have severely disrupted vital commercial supply chains, triggering critical shortages of food and life-saving medicines.

The political tensions reached a boiling point during a massive rally held at the Eidgah ground in Rawalakot. Addressing a large, restive crowd, Khan questioned the assembly on whether they should march directly towards the heavily militarised LoC. In response, the gathered demonstrators repeatedly chanted slogans urging the leadership to move forward.

Khan delivered a stern warning to the Pakistani establishment, declaring that if the state chooses to answer the legitimate economic grievances of the public with bullets, alternative strategic paths remain open to the movement. He specifically demanded that the LoC be opened across the Poonch and Doda sectors to alleviate economic pressure on the local population. Indian broadcaster NDTV, which monitored the footage of the 30 June rally, noted that the authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.

Systemic Marginalisation and the Fight for Autonomy

The unrest in the region has been building for over a month, driven by deep-seated resentment against the federal administration in Islamabad. The ongoing clashes between security forces and local civilian groups have already resulted in dozens of fatalities. At a separate mass gathering at the Eidgah ground last week, demonstrators explicitly chanted that the region is not a part of Pakistan, alongside open demands for independence.

What originally began as a localised movement seeking basic economic concessions, such as fair wheat subsidies and power tariff reforms, has swiftly transformed into a broader political campaign challenging Islamabad’s long-standing constitutional authority. Legal and political experts observe that this crisis highlights a severe structural disconnect between the grassroots population and the relatively powerless regional administration, which remains fiercely loyal to the federal government.

The political environment grew significantly more hostile on 5 June, when Pakistani authorities officially banned the JAAC, designating the grassroots rights group as a terrorist organisation. This heavy-handed legislative measure has only served to deeply alienate the local population, shifting their demands from administrative changes to outright independence.

A recent report published by the International Centre for Peace Studies highlights that successive governments in Islamabad have historically manipulated the territory’s political landscape through mainstream national parties, systematically eroding the influence of genuine local factions. The study noted that the political party holding power in Islamabad invariably wins regional elections in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan—a recurring trend that analysts argue reflects systemic interference rather than democratic coincidence.
