Banned Chhatra League Rally Sparks Debate in Natore

A brief procession and roadside gathering organised under the banner of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League in Natore has drawn widespread attention after video footage of the event circulated across social media, prompting renewed public discussion and a police inquiry.

The programme took place at around 7:00 a.m. on Friday along the Natore–Rajshahi highway near Dhalan Bazar in Natore Sadar Upazila. Although the gathering lasted only a few minutes, recordings shared later on Facebook brought the incident into the public spotlight and triggered significant debate both locally and online.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, between 15 and 20 individuals carrying Bangladesh Chhatra League banners and the national flag assembled on the highway shortly after daybreak. Participants marched for approximately five minutes before stopping at a nearby road junction, where they held a brief roadside meeting.

Witnesses said one speaker addressed the gathering while standing on top of a van. They also reported seeing a white microbus moving close to the participants throughout the programme, a vehicle that is also said to be visible in videos circulating on social media.

During the gathering, speakers called for the withdrawal of all legal cases filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Footage of the speeches and slogans spread rapidly online, turning what had been a short, early-morning event into a widely discussed political issue.

Former Rajshahi University Chhatra League leader Emran Hossain defended the programme, arguing that holding a procession was an exercise of freedom of expression. He also alleged that, after the procession had dispersed, several shops in the area were vandalised and a number of individuals were assaulted. However, he did not provide detailed information or publicly available evidence to substantiate those claims.

Police said they were not immediately aware that any such procession had taken place.

Officer-in-Charge Mansur Rahman of Natore Sadar Police Station stated that law enforcement had received no immediate information about the event while it was occurring. After the videos emerged online, police began gathering information to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

He said that if evidence confirms activities by a banned organisation or any actions contrary to public order and existing law, appropriate legal measures will be taken in accordance with the country’s legal framework.

Sources familiar with the incident said the programme was deliberately held shortly after dawn and lasted only a few minutes, meaning no law enforcement personnel were present at the location during the event. Participants reportedly dispersed quickly after completing the procession and roadside meeting, leaving the area before authorities became aware of what had occurred.

The circulation of video footage on social media subsequently brought the matter to the attention of the administration, illustrating how digital platforms increasingly serve as an initial source of information about unfolding events. At the same time, analysts caution that online videos alone should not be treated as definitive evidence. They argue that any assessment of such incidents should rely on official investigations, corroborating eyewitness accounts and verification of available material before firm conclusions are drawn.

Political observers note that social media has become an influential factor in shaping public awareness of political developments, particularly when events occur outside the immediate view of authorities or traditional news coverage. While such footage can provide valuable leads, it may not always present the full context of an incident. As a result, investigators are generally expected to examine the authenticity, sequence and surrounding circumstances before determining whether any laws have been breached.

Following the Natore incident, local authorities said they would continue monitoring the situation. Law enforcement agencies reiterated that maintaining public order remains a priority and emphasised that any verified violation of the law, including activities involving banned organisations or actions that disrupt public safety, would be dealt with through the appropriate legal process.
