Cache of Arms Recovered in Chapainawabganj Graveyard

In Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have recovered a locally made firearm, ammunition, and magazines from a graveyard following intelligence provided by local residents. No arrests were made during the operation.

The incident took place on Wednesday in a graveyard located in the Babupur Miratuli area under Nayalavanga Union. According to RAB officials, the operation began at approximately 6:45 pm after villagers reported seeing a suspicious bag lying unattended in a secluded section of the burial ground.

Acting promptly on the information, a RAB team reached the scene and initiated a search operation. During the sweep, officers discovered a cloth-wrapped bag hidden in the south-western corner of the graveyard. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain one locally manufactured firearm, ten rounds of ammunition, and two magazines.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the items may have been concealed for illicit storage or transportation purposes. However, authorities have stated that the exact intention behind the concealment remains under investigation.

Following the recovery, the seized items were handed over to Shibganj Police Station for further legal proceedings and forensic examination. Law enforcement agencies have since intensified intelligence activities in the area to identify those potentially involved.

Local residents noted that the graveyard is situated in a relatively isolated area with limited daily foot traffic, making it susceptible to misuse by criminal elements for covert activities. Nevertheless, officials have emphasised that no conclusive evidence has yet been established linking any individual or group to the cache.

RAB has reiterated that nationwide operations against illegal arms and organised crime are ongoing, with increased surveillance in border-adjacent districts where the movement of illicit weapons is considered a persistent concern.
