Mystery Surrounds Youth Found Dead in Pabna Pond

Police have recovered the body of a 20-year-old man from a pond beside his in-laws’ home in Pabna, with a towel wrapped around his neck, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, identified as Tuhin Kha, was found on Saturday (11 July) at around 10:00 am in the Lalgola area of Noldah Purbapara under Bhandara Union in Pabna Sadar Upazila. Authorities have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, saying the medical findings will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death.

The incident was confirmed by Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam.

According to police, Tuhin was the son of Habibur Rahman, also known as Habi Kha, from Tatipara village in Chartarapur Union of Pabna Sadar. His father-in-law, Akhtar Hossain, is a Bangladeshi expatriate currently living in Dubai, while his wife, Afsana Khatun, resides in the Lalgola area.

Local residents said Tuhin had visited his in-laws’ home on Friday. During the evening, he reportedly became involved in an argument with his wife. He was later unaccounted for. On Saturday morning, residents noticed a body floating in a nearby pond and immediately informed the police. Officers arrived at the scene, recovered the body and observed that a towel had been wrapped around the victim’s neck.

Speaking about the case, OC Tarikul Islam said preliminary information suggests Tuhin may have taken his own life in the veranda of a nearby mosque during the night. Police reportedly received information about the incident at around 2:00 am. However, when officers reached the location, the body was no longer there.

The officer alleged that some local people had moved the body and disposed of it in the pond before it was later discovered floating by residents the following morning. He stressed that investigators are examining every aspect of the incident to establish a clear sequence of events.

Police have not reached a final conclusion regarding the cause of death. While the initial assessment points towards possible suicide, investigators say the post-mortem examination and further forensic analysis will be essential before confirming how Tuhin died. Officers are also collecting statements from witnesses and examining the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The OC added that preliminary information gathered during the investigation suggests Tuhin had allegedly struggled with drug addiction. Police also learned that disagreements over his alleged drug use had contributed to tensions at his in-laws’ home shortly before the incident. Investigators cautioned, however, that these claims remain part of the ongoing inquiry and have not yet been independently verified.

The body is being sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police say the investigation will continue until the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death are fully established, and they have urged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the inquiry.
