Police have recovered the hanging body of an unidentified young man from an abandoned house in the Banglamotor area of Dhaka, launching an investigation to determine both the circumstances surrounding his death and his identity.
The body, believed to be that of a man aged around 28, was discovered on Saturday (11 July) inside a deserted property reportedly owned by a man named Saiful Islam, within the jurisdiction of Shahbagh Police Station.
According to police, officers responded after receiving a call through Bangladesh’s national emergency service, 999, at around 10:45 a.m. Upon entering the abandoned premises, they found the man hanging from a tree located inside the property. The body was subsequently recovered, and legal formalities were completed before it was sent to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at approximately 12:30 p.m. for a post-mortem examination.
Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station said the initial information came from the emergency hotline, prompting officers to visit the scene immediately. After confirming the man’s death, investigators secured the area and began documenting the scene as part of the standard investigative process.
Police said preliminary observations suggest the death may have been a case of suicide. Investigators, however, stressed that no definitive conclusion can be reached until the post-mortem examination is completed. The forensic report is expected to clarify the precise cause of death and determine whether any other factors may have been involved.
“The initial indication is that the victim may have taken his own life,” Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam said. “However, the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the autopsy report is received. We are treating the matter with due caution and investigating all possible aspects.”
The officer added that the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had been informed and would examine the location for forensic evidence. Crime scene specialists are expected to collect and analyse any physical evidence that could help reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
As the deceased was not carrying any documents that could immediately establish his identity, police have initiated efforts to identify him using technological and forensic methods. Investigators hope that fingerprint analysis and other available techniques will help trace his identity and locate his family.
Officials said establishing the victim’s identity will be a crucial step in the investigation, allowing detectives to examine his recent movements, personal background and any possible circumstances that may have contributed to his death.
Police have not ruled out any line of inquiry and said the investigation will continue until the post-mortem findings, forensic analysis and other evidence provide a clear picture of how the incident occurred.
