Job Interview Journey Ends in Tragic Train Accident

A young man who had come to Dhaka in search of a better future died after being hit by a train while he was on his way to attend a job interview. The victim, identified as Mohammad Rakib, 28, was struck by a train near Kuril Bishwaroad in the capital on Sunday (12 July) morning.

Rakib was the son of Mohammad Mofizul Islam from Char Khalifa village under Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola district. He had recently completed his honours degree and had travelled to Dhaka with hopes of starting his professional career. According to his family, he left home that morning for a job-related purpose, but the journey ended in a tragic accident.

Witnesses said the incident took place at around 6:30am near the Kuril railway crossing area. Rakib was walking alongside the railway track and attempted to cross the line when a moving train struck him. He suffered severe injuries and was left in a critical condition.

Local people rushed to rescue him and arranged for his immediate medical treatment. A passer-by named Abu Raihan took Rakib to Kurmitola General Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, as his condition deteriorated, doctors advised that he be shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for further treatment.

Rakib was brought to the emergency department of DMCH at around 8:10am. After conducting medical examinations, doctors declared him dead at 8:15am.

Abu Raihan, who helped take Rakib to hospital, said there was light rain at the time of the accident. He said Rakib appeared to have been crossing the railway track while holding an umbrella over his head. It is believed that the umbrella may have prevented him from hearing the approaching train’s horn or noticing the train in time.

The incident has left Rakib’s family devastated. His father said Rakib had recently completed his higher education and had come to the capital from their village with the hope of securing a job and supporting his family. The young man had been preparing to begin a new chapter of his life, but his dreams were cut short in a sudden accident.

Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed Rakib’s death. He said the body had been kept at the emergency department’s morgue for post-mortem examination. The matter has also been reported to the concerned police station, and further legal procedures are underway.

Railway crossings and tracks in densely populated areas of Dhaka frequently witness accidents caused by carelessness, poor visibility and a lack of awareness among pedestrians. Authorities have repeatedly urged people to remain cautious while crossing railway lines, especially during adverse weather conditions. Rakib’s death once again highlights the risks associated with unsafe movement near railway tracks.
