Mystery Surrounds Naogaon Couple’s Deaths

Police have recovered the bodies of a husband and wife from their home in Mahadebpur Upazila of Naogaon, triggering widespread concern and speculation in the local community. While preliminary observations have raised questions about the cause of death, investigators have stressed that no definitive conclusions can be drawn until the post-mortem examination and forensic analysis are completed.

The deceased have been identified as Lokman Mondal, 55, and his wife Delowara Begum, 45, residents of Paharpur village under Sofapur Union. According to local residents, the couple appeared to be following their normal routine on Sunday evening. They reportedly had dinner together and went to bed as usual, with nothing unusual noticed by neighbours or relatives during the night.

According to local sources, at around 4:00 a.m. on Monday, the couple’s son, Mukhtar Hossain, called nearby residents after discovering that his parents were unresponsive. Neighbours rushed to the house and found both Lokman Mondal and Delowara Begum lying motionless on their bed. Police were subsequently informed and officers from Mahadebpur Police Station arrived at the scene, recovering the bodies before sending them to the morgue at Naogaon Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The incident has prompted widespread discussion across the village, with various theories circulating among residents. Some locals have alleged that Mukhtar Hossain was known in the area for drug use and mobile-based gambling. They also claimed that he frequently sought money from his parents to support these habits and that disagreements over financial matters had recently emerged within the family.

Based on these allegations, some residents have speculated that the couple may have been administered a poisonous substance. However, these claims remain unverified and are based solely on local accounts. Investigators have emphasised that none of these allegations has been substantiated through official inquiries, and no evidence has yet linked any individual to the deaths.

Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk of Mahadebpur Police Station said officers responded promptly after receiving information about the incident and arranged for the bodies to undergo post-mortem examinations. He noted that poisoning could not be ruled out at this stage, but described it only as a preliminary possibility rather than a confirmed cause of death.

“The actual cause of death can only be determined after the post-mortem report is received and all available evidence has been properly examined,” the police official said. He added that investigators are collecting physical evidence from the scene and questioning family members, neighbours and other individuals who may have relevant information.

Police said the investigation is being treated with priority. Detectives are examining several aspects of the couple’s lives, including their recent movements, family relationships, any financial or personal disputes, and other circumstances that may have contributed to the incident. Authorities have made it clear that every possible angle remains under consideration and that no hypothesis will be accepted or dismissed until supported by evidence.

The deaths have cast a shadow over Paharpur village, where residents have expressed both grief and anxiety. Many have urged law enforcement agencies to complete the investigation swiftly, uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths, and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought before the courts in accordance with the law.

Officials have reiterated that the findings of the post-mortem examination, together with forensic evidence and witness statements, will determine the next course of legal action.
