Three Killed, Two Injured in Truck-Autorickshaw Crash in Mymensingh

Three people, including two women, were killed and two others injured when a truck collided with a battery-powered autorickshaw in Mymensingh on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at around 11.30am in front of a truck depot near the Palli Bidyut office on the Mymensingh–Kishoreganj road in the Shambhuganj area of the city.

The deceased were identified as Debraj Ghosh, 35, son of Dilip Ghosh of Jubilee Ghat in Mymensingh city; Sheela, 25, daughter of Abdul Motaleb of Dadra village in Tarakanda upazila; and Abeda, 35, wife of Rafiqul Islam of Majhipara in Shambhuganj.

According to police, the battery-powered autorickshaw was travelling from Shambhuganj towards Kishoreganj in the morning. As it approached the area beside the Palli Bidyut office, a truck emerging from a nearby depot reportedly struck the autorickshaw with considerable force.

The impact left the smaller vehicle severely damaged. Debraj Ghosh died at the scene, while the autorickshaw driver and three female passengers sustained injuries in the crash.

Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the impact and helped rescue the injured. They were subsequently taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment. Doctors there declared Sheela and Abeda dead after their arrival.

Another woman was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. The autorickshaw driver, who was also injured, reportedly left the hospital after receiving initial treatment. Further details about his condition were not immediately available.

Sub-Inspector Khalid of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station confirmed the incident. He said one of the bodies had been recovered from the accident site, while the bodies of the two women were kept in the hospital morgue.

The crash has caused grief among the victims’ families and local residents. The Mymensingh–Kishoreganj road is an important route for regional travel, with buses, trucks, autorickshaws and other vehicles using it regularly. Accidents involving battery-powered three-wheelers and larger commercial vehicles are particularly dangerous because of the significant difference in size and weight between the vehicles.

Police said legal proceedings were under way in connection with the accident. The circumstances surrounding the collision, including how the truck entered the main road from the depot and the actions of those involved, will be examined as part of the investigation.

Authorities are expected to take further legal action based on the findings of the investigation. Meanwhile, the recovery of the bodies and other necessary procedures are being carried out in accordance with the law.
