India Outpaces Major Insurance Markets with 7.1% Growth

Asian insurance markets are positioned to comfortably outshine global performance benchmarks, anchored by robust life insurance demand across India and China. Research conducted by the Swiss Re Institute indicates that overall global insurance premium growth will ease to a modest 1.3 per cent in real terms. Against the backdrop of a broader worldwide deceleration, India stands out as the fastest-expanding market among the world’s twenty largest economies, posting an impressive real premium growth rate of 7.1 per cent.

Divergent Growth Across Key Asian Economies

India’s life insurance segment is set to climb by approximately 7 per cent, buoyed by favorable tax adjustments and regulatory updates. On the non-life side, expanding public healthcare needs and consistent demand within the motor insurance sector continue to strengthen the country’s broader industry foundation.

In China, the life insurance sector is projected to expand by roughly 6 per cent in real terms, marking a slowdown from the 9.4 per cent recorded. Despite this cooling trend, appetite for dedicated savings products remains resilient, aided by product innovations and a steady stream of bank deposits reaching maturity. However, China’s non-life sector is expected to moderate to 2.9 per cent growth, falling well below its historical decade-long average of 7.9 per cent as sluggish economic activity and cautious consumer sentiment weigh on personal protection lines.

Advanced Asia-Pacific Performance and Demographics

Advanced economies across the Asia-Pacific territory are navigating a more pronounced deceleration. Life insurance premium expansion in these developed jurisdictions is expected to cool to 2.5 per cent, down sharply from 8.4 per cent. Demographics and inflationary pressures are playing a defining role in this trend. Japan is facing a modest 0.3 per cent growth rate, where an ageing and shrinking population restricts traditional life protection demand. Meanwhile, Australia is expected to post 0.7 per cent growth in real life premiums, as persistent inflation negates the gains from higher household incomes and steady immigration.

Conversely, non-life lines in advanced regional markets demonstrate stronger momentum, with real premium growth edging up to 2.1 per cent. Property cover repricing following significant natural catastrophe events is driving top-line growth in Australia, while elevated vehicle repair costs are keeping auto insurance rates firm across South Korea.

Technological Expansion and Macroeconomic Headwinds

Substantial regional investment in artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing is generating fresh commercial insurance opportunities. With Asian microchip exports surging by 74 per cent year-on-year, major producer hubs like Taiwan and South Korea are reaping direct benefits. Concurrently, Singapore and Malaysia are rapidly building out their profiles as specialized data centre hubs. This industrial expansion is triggering elevated demand for property, engineering, cyber, liability, and business interruption policies. Nevertheless, massive data complexes and their supporting power infrastructure introduce concentrated risk profiles that demand extensive underwriting limits.

At the macro level, higher interest rates are bolstering net investment yields for life underwriters across the region. Even so, ongoing energy and supply-chain frictions risk pushing up repair, construction, and property claims, particularly across economies that rely heavily on energy imports.
