Arijit Singh Condemns Police Action Against Protesting Students

Popular Indian singer Arijit Singh has expressed strong anger over allegations that police used batons and tear gas against students protesting in Delhi. In a social media post, Singh criticised the authorities and Delhi Police, questioning the use of force against young protesters and warning that such actions would not be forgotten.

‘You are beating students now too! Do you think you are God?’ Singh wrote in his message. He added that everything would be remembered and stressed that change was the only constant. His remarks quickly attracted attention, adding a prominent celebrity voice to a wider debate over the handling of the student demonstrations.

The protests in Delhi have reportedly continued for more than two weeks, with students raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the education system and claims surrounding question-paper leaks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, commonly known as NEET. The examination is a crucial gateway for students seeking admission to medical colleges in India, making any allegation of malpractice a particularly sensitive issue for candidates and their families.

According to the protesters, their demonstrations were peaceful and intended to draw attention to their concerns. However, police reportedly resorted to baton charges and tear gas to disperse the gathering. Videos purportedly showing the police action subsequently circulated widely on the internet, prompting criticism from sections of the public and reigniting discussion about the authorities’ response to student protests.

The incident has also drawn support from figures in India’s film and cultural community. Alongside Arijit Singh, veteran actor Shabana Azmi, actor Naseeruddin Shah and actress Sonakshi Sinha are among those reported to have expressed solidarity with the protesting students. Their involvement has helped bring additional public attention to the demonstrations and the issues being raised by the participants.

Prominent social activist Sonam Wangchuk also joined the movement and reportedly undertook a hunger strike in support of the students’ demands. He was later admitted to hospital by police, according to the report. His participation further widened the public discussion surrounding the protests, with concerns being raised about the health and safety of those taking part in prolonged demonstrations.

The confrontation between protesters and law enforcement has prompted calls for a dialogue between the government and the students. Several public figures and prominent voices have urged the authorities to engage directly with the protesters and seek a peaceful resolution rather than allowing tensions to escalate.

The controversy comes amid broader concerns in India over examination integrity, transparency and the pressure faced by students competing for places in highly sought-after professional courses. Allegations of question-paper leaks and irregularities can have serious consequences for candidates who spend years preparing for competitive examinations.

Against that backdrop, the response to the Delhi protests has become a matter of public debate. While the authorities are responsible for maintaining public order, critics argue that student grievances should be addressed through transparent investigations and meaningful dialogue. Arijit Singh’s intervention has added momentum to that conversation, with his comments reflecting growing calls for accountability and restraint in dealing with student-led protests.
