Mirpur Gunfire Leaves Three Injured, Including Youth Leader

At least three people, including a leader of the Jubo Dal, were reportedly shot during a gun attack in Mirpur-13 in the capital late on Friday night. The incident took place at around 11.30pm on 24 July in an area under Kafrul Police Station, triggering panic among residents.

The injured were identified as Yusuf Ali, 45, Nalam Sardar, 45, and Monir Hossain, 32, according to local sources. Yusuf Ali is reportedly involved in Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) politics. Local party activists also claimed that Hafizur Rahman, member secretary of the Kafrul thana unit of Jubo Dal, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. However, police did not immediately confirm the full identities of those injured or the exact number of casualties.

According to local BNP activist Md Sujon, Hafizur Rahman and seven to eight other people were together in the Mirpur-13 area at around 11.30pm when three armed men suddenly arrived and opened fire at them. The shooting reportedly caused immediate panic, with people in the vicinity rushing to seek shelter as gunshots rang out in the residential area.

Sujon claimed that Hafizur Rahman was hit by two bullets, while BNP activist Yusuf Ali sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Details about how Nalam Sardar and Monir Hossain were injured, and whether they were directly targeted or caught in the shooting, were not immediately available.

Following the attack, local residents came forward to assist the injured. They were subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment. Their current condition was not immediately known, and no detailed medical update was available at the time of reporting.

The incident also led to the detention of a man suspected of being armed. Several local residents reportedly apprehended the individual after the shooting and handed him over to police. His identity was not immediately disclosed. It was also unclear whether any firearm or other weapon had been recovered from him.

Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed that a shooting had taken place in the area. He said police had received information that two people had sustained gunshot injuries and that they had been taken to hospital.

There is, however, a discrepancy between the police account and information provided by local residents regarding the number of people injured. While local sources reported at least three people being shot, the police initially confirmed information about two injured individuals. The actual number of casualties is therefore expected to become clearer as the investigation progresses and further information is verified.

Police have not yet established what prompted the attack or identified those responsible. It also remains unclear whether the shooting was linked to a political dispute, a previous personal conflict, or another motive.
