Jamaat Expels Gazi Nazrul Over Alleged Moral Misconduct

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has taken organisational action against Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, following the circulation of a private video on social media. The party has said a disciplinary investigation found the allegations of moral misconduct against him to be substantiated and that it had consequently decided to expel him from the organisation.

Jamaat formally informed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin of the decision in a letter, while a copy was also sent to the Speaker of the National Parliament. The party has requested the relevant authorities to take necessary steps within their respective jurisdictions.

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar delivered the letter to the CEC at the Election Commission on Thursday afternoon, 23 July. The submission was intended to formally bring the expulsion decision to the Election Commission’s attention and to request action regarding the matter.

According to the letter, Jamaat launched an internal organisational investigation after reports concerning Gazi Nazrul Islam appeared in various media outlets and a video involving him was circulated widely on social media. The party said the investigation concluded that allegations of moral misconduct had been established against the MP.

On that basis, the party decided to expel him under Article 62 of its constitution. The decision, according to the letter, was formally endorsed at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held on 22 July under the chairmanship of the party’s Ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman.

The letter stated that the council discussed the findings of the organisational investigation and considered the steps to be taken against Gazi Nazrul Islam. The decision to expel him was reportedly taken unanimously.

Jamaat’s communication to the Election Commission comes amid wider public discussion surrounding the circulation of the private video.
