Jamaat Expels Gazi Nazrul Over Alleged Moral Misconduct

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has taken organisational action against Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, following the circulation of a private video on social media. The party has said a disciplinary investigation found the allegations of moral misconduct against him to be substantiated and that it had consequently decided to expel him from the organisation.

Jamaat formally informed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin of the decision in a letter, while a copy was also sent to the Speaker of the National Parliament. The party has requested the relevant authorities to take necessary steps within their respective jurisdictions.

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar delivered the letter to the CEC at the Election Commission on Thursday afternoon, 23 July. The submission was intended to formally bring the expulsion decision to the Election Commission’s attention and to request action regarding the matter.

According to the letter, Jamaat launched an internal organisational investigation after reports concerning Gazi Nazrul Islam appeared in various media outlets and a video involving him was circulated widely on social media. The party said the investigation concluded that allegations of moral misconduct had been established against the MP.

On that basis, the party decided to expel him under Article 62 of its constitution. The decision, according to the letter, was formally endorsed at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held on 22 July under the chairmanship of the party’s Ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman.

The letter stated that the council discussed the findings of the organisational investigation and considered the steps to be taken against Gazi Nazrul Islam. The decision to expel him was reportedly taken unanimously.

Jamaat’s communication to the Election Commission comes amid wider public discussion surrounding the circulation of the private video. The incident has generated considerable debate on social media and attracted attention in political circles, eventually prompting the party to initiate an internal review.

The party subsequently decided that the matter warranted organisational action. Following the decision on 22 July, Jamaat informed both the Election Commission and the parliamentary authorities the next day, on 23 July.

The issue now raises questions about the institutional consequences of the party’s decision. While a political organisation may take disciplinary measures against one of its members under its own constitution, any implications for an elected lawmaker’s parliamentary position or political status would have to be considered under the relevant constitutional, electoral and parliamentary provisions.

Jamaat’s letter specifically sought to notify the Election Commission of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s expulsion and requested that the commission take whatever steps it considers appropriate within its authority. By sending a copy to the Speaker, the party also formally brought the matter to the attention of the parliamentary authorities.

Gazi Nazrul Islam represents the Satkhira-4 constituency. The circulation of the private video placed him at the centre of public and political scrutiny, with reactions emerging across social media and the wider political sphere. The matter subsequently became a subject of internal consideration within Jamaat.

No response from Gazi Nazrul Islam was mentioned in the details of the letter, and his position on the party’s decision was not immediately available in the information provided. It therefore remains to be seen how the Election Commission and parliamentary authorities will assess the party’s communication and whether any further institutional process will follow.

The development has added a new dimension to the controversy, shifting the matter from an internal party disciplinary issue to one that has now been formally brought before the country’s electoral and parliamentary institutions.
