Two Dead in Fatal Bus-Noshimon Collision in Munshiganj

Two people lost their lives and another sustained severe injuries on Saturday afternoon following a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a three-wheeled local freight vehicle, locally known as a noshimon, in Munshiganj’s Sreenagar sub-district.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 pm in the Laskarpur area along the Hasara–Baraikhali road. Emergency services and local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the impact to rescue the victims from the wreckage.

Sequence of Events and Fatalities

According to emergency officials, the collision involved a Dhaka-bound Baishakhi Paribahan passenger bus travelling towards Gulistan and a freight-carrying noshimon coming from the opposite direction.

The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Majnu, the driver of the noshimon and son of Aiyub Miah from Madankhali village in Baraikhali union, and 45-year-old Dulal Chandra, son of Sadhan Chandra from Khara Munipara village in the same sub-district.

Muhammed Safiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of the Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that the control room received information about the incident at 5:36 pm. Emergency teams, alongside local police and bystanders, extracted the driver and two passengers from the damaged local vehicle before transporting them to the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex.

Upon arrival at the health complex, attending doctors pronounced both Majnu and Dulal Chandra dead. The third injured individual remains under intensive medical care at the facility.

The fatal crash underscores persistent road safety issues across rural and semi-urban transit routes in Bangladesh, where motorised passenger vehicles frequently share narrow thoroughfares with locally improvised freight haulers.

The noshimon—a shallow engine-driven improvised vehicle widely used for transporting agricultural produce and heavy goods across rural districts—often lacks standardised safety features, crash protection, and formal clearance for high-speed arterial roads. When operating on regional connectors like the Hasara–Baraikhali route alongside commercial buses, the structural disparity between heavy passenger coaches and lightweight haulers frequently results in severe casualties during head-on impacts.

Police and local authorities have initiated preliminary procedures following the crash, while local transport movements along the Hasara–Baraikhali road resumed shortly after emergency crews cleared the vehicle debris from the site.
