A 35-year-old man was allegedly killed by having his throat slit while he was asleep at his home in Netrokona Sadar Upazila, with police suspecting the incident took place sometime between late Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday.
The victim, Mahful Mia, son of the late Yakub Ali, was found dead at his home in the western part of Duani Dudhkhura village. He was the father of three children. The killing has caused considerable concern among local residents, while police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to police and local sources, Mahful had dinner on Saturday night before going to sleep in his own room. Investigators suspect that unidentified assailants may have entered the house during the night and attacked him while he was asleep. Based on the initial assessment, police believe the killing may have occurred between midnight and around 5am on Sunday.
The victim’s mother reportedly discovered the incident in the early morning. After waking up, she noticed that the door to her son’s room was open, which she found unusual. She then shone a torch into the room and saw Mahful lying in a blood-soaked condition. She raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to the house.
Police from Netrokona Model Police Station later arrived at the scene and recovered the body. Officers prepared an initial inquest report and collected various items and other potential evidence that could assist the investigation. The body is expected to undergo a post-mortem examination as part of the legal process.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear. However, several possible explanations are being examined as investigators seek to establish whether the attack was linked to a personal dispute, a family matter or a property-related conflict.
Some local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed that Mahful’s wife had left for her parental home around two to three years ago. His two daughters were reportedly living with their grandmother. Residents also alleged that Mahful had been involved in a dispute over land with a neighbouring man and speculated that the conflict could have played a role in the killing.
There have also been local allegations that Mahful regularly gambled. However, these claims could not be independently verified, and there is currently no confirmed evidence linking such allegations to the murder.
Police are reportedly considering a land dispute as one possible motive, but investigators have not reached a definitive conclusion. Family disputes, personal enmity and property-related disagreements are among the issues being examined as part of the inquiry.
Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge of Netrokona Model Police Station, said a man had been killed by having his throat slit and that police had collected various pieces of evidence from the scene. He said investigators were working to determine the motive and identify those responsible, adding that appropriate legal action would follow the investigation.
No arrest had been officially confirmed in connection with the killing at the time of reporting. Police are expected to examine the physical evidence, interview relatives and local residents, and investigate any possible disputes involving the victim as they work to establish how the killing occurred and who was responsible.
