Bus Overturns in Brahmanbaria, Leaving 12 Injured

At least 12 people were injured when a passenger bus overturned into a roadside ditch in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria on Sunday morning.

The accident took place at around 11am on 26 July in the Golasar area of Kharera Union, along the Cumilla–Sylhet Highway. The bus, operated by Diganta Paribahan, was travelling towards Brahmanbaria town from the Kuti area of Kasba when the incident occurred.

According to police and local sources, the bus was carrying passengers when one of its tyres suddenly burst after it reached the Golasar area. The sudden mechanical problem reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus then veered off the highway and overturned into a ditch beside the road.

Several passengers were injured in the crash. As soon as the bus went off the road, local residents rushed to the scene and began helping the victims. They reportedly pulled injured and trapped passengers out of the overturned vehicle and arranged for them to receive medical attention.

The quick response from people living near the accident site helped speed up the rescue operation and may have prevented a more serious loss of life. The injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital, where they received initial treatment. Details of their identities were not immediately available, and authorities had yet to confirm whether any of the injured were in critical condition.

Police from the Sarail Khatihata Highway Police Station reached the scene after receiving information about the accident. Mohammad Abu Taher, officer-in-charge of the Sarail Khatihata Highway Police Station, said police went to the scene soon after being informed of the accident. Efforts were under way to recover the overturned bus, he said. The driver, however, reportedly left the scene after the accident, preventing police from immediately questioning him about what had happened.

Although the initial account points to a tyre burst followed by a loss of control, investigators will need to establish the precise circumstances. Questions may include the condition of the bus before the journey, the state of its tyres and braking system, the speed at which it was travelling and the driver’s response when the tyre failed.
