BGB Seizes Indian Sarees and Chocolates Worth Tk 6.8m

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized Indian sarees, chocolates and a mini truck worth an estimated Tk 68.26 million during separate anti-smuggling operations along the border areas of Feni’s Fulgazi and Chhagalnaiya upazilas.

The seizure was announced in a press release issued by Feni Battalion (4 BGB) on Monday, 27 July.

According to the release, a special patrol team from the battalion conducted operations in border areas following confidential intelligence reports. During the raids, the team recovered a large consignment of Indian sarees and chocolates, along with a mini truck allegedly used to transport the smuggled goods.

The seized items have an estimated market value of Tk 68,259,50, according to the BGB statement. The goods are being processed for handover to the local customs authorities for further legal action.

The BGB did not provide details of any arrests in connection with the seizures.

Feni shares a border with India and is regarded as an important area for border security and efforts to curb the illegal movement of goods. Border forces regularly conduct patrols and intelligence-led operations in the region to prevent smuggling and other cross-border offences.

The latest operation comes as part of the BGB’s continuing efforts to disrupt smuggling networks and prevent the unauthorised movement of goods across the international border. Indian sarees and other consumer products are among the items that can be targeted in anti-smuggling operations when they are brought into Bangladesh outside authorised trade channels.

Lieutenant Colonel MM Zillur Rahman, commander of Feni Battalion (4 BGB), said the force remained highly vigilant to prevent any attempt at illegal infiltration and to ensure border security.

He said the BGB was continuing its regular patrols and intelligence activities to prevent smuggling, including the trafficking of narcotics and other prohibited goods. The force is also working to reduce border-related fatalities to zero, he added.

The commander stressed that maintaining security along the border requires sustained vigilance and coordinated action. Intelligence-based operations, in particular, enable the authorities to identify suspected smuggling routes and intervene before illicit consignments can be moved further inland.

The seized goods and the mini truck are expected to be handed over to the relevant customs authorities once the necessary procedures have been completed. Further action will be taken in accordance with the law following examination and assessment by the concerned authorities.

The operation highlights the continuing focus of the BGB and other border agencies on tackling cross-border smuggling in Feni. Authorities are expected to maintain surveillance and patrols in the area to deter similar attempts and protect legitimate trade through authorised channels.
