Measles-Linked Child Deaths Rise to 825 Nationwide

The number of children who have died from measles and suspected measles has risen to 825 across the country, with five more deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The deaths were reported in the DGHS’s regular measles situation report published on Monday, 27 July. The report said all five of the latest fatalities involved children who died while being treated for symptoms associated with measles. No new death among patients with laboratory-confirmed measles was recorded during the same 24-hour period.

Since 15 March, a total of 825 children have died either from confirmed measles or while suffering from suspected measles symptoms. Of the total, 730 deaths were recorded among patients with measles-like symptoms, while 95 children died after being confirmed as having measles.

The latest report also showed that the outbreak and the wider burden of suspected cases remain substantial. A total of 1,105 new cases of measles or measles-like illness were identified over the past day. Between 15 March and 27 July, the number of suspected measles cases reached 124,745, while confirmed measles infections stood at 15,555.

The gap between suspected and confirmed cases indicates the scale of the broader health burden being managed by hospitals and health facilities. Although the number of laboratory-confirmed infections is considerably lower than the number of suspected cases, a large proportion of people experiencing symptoms consistent with measles have required medical attention.

During the same period, 107,654 patients with measles or suspected measles were admitted to hospitals. Of them, 103,467 recovered and were discharged after receiving treatment. The figures suggest that health facilities have managed to treat and discharge a large majority of those admitted, although new cases and deaths continue to be reported.

The continued deaths among children remain a major concern. Since 15 March, 730 children have died after developing suspected measles symptoms, while another 95 have died following confirmed measles infection. The combined toll has now reached 825.

Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases and can spread rapidly through respiratory droplets and airborne particles released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. Children who have not received the recommended vaccination, or whose immunisation is incomplete, face a higher risk of infection and complications.

The risk can be particularly serious for children who are malnourished or have weakened immune systems. Complications may include pneumonia, severe dehydration and other serious health problems, especially when treatment is delayed. Early recognition of symptoms and timely medical care can therefore play an important role in reducing the risk of severe illness.

With suspected cases now exceeding 124,000, health authorities face the continuing challenge of identifying infections quickly, providing appropriate treatment and strengthening vaccination efforts. Public health specialists also stress the importance of ensuring that children receive routine immunisations and that those showing symptoms are assessed promptly by healthcare professionals.

The latest figures are part of the DGHS’s ongoing surveillance of the measles situation. As new cases are identified and further investigations are conducted, the reported numbers of suspected cases, confirmed infections and deaths may continue to change.
