Measles Symptoms Claim Three More Children as Cases Rise

Three more children have died after developing symptoms associated with measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 1,075 new suspected cases were recorded during the same period, according to the latest figures from the Directorate General of Health Services.

The figures were released in the regular measles surveillance report issued by the health authorities on Wednesday afternoon, 29 July, highlighting the continuing spread of the disease and the pressure it is placing on health services.

According to the report, two children died in the Chattogram division after developing symptoms consistent with measles. Another child died in the Dhaka division after being infected with measles. The latest deaths add to a steadily rising toll recorded since the outbreak began to intensify in March.

Since 15 March, the combined number of deaths attributed to confirmed measles and suspected measles symptoms has reached 831, the health authorities said. Of these, 95 deaths have been officially confirmed as being caused by measles, while 735 people have died after presenting with symptoms associated with the disease.

The figures indicate the scale of the ongoing public health concern, particularly among children, who are among the groups most vulnerable to severe complications from measles. The disease is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in communities where vaccination coverage is inadequate or where children have missed routine immunisation.

Measles typically causes fever, cough, a runny nose and a distinctive rash. In severe cases, particularly among young children and those who are malnourished or have weakened immunity, the infection can lead to complications such as pneumonia, severe dehydration and inflammation of the brain.

The latest surveillance data also underline the importance of early detection and timely medical care. Health officials have repeatedly stressed the need for families to seek treatment when children develop persistent fever, rash or other symptoms associated with measles, rather than delaying medical attention.

The rise in suspected cases has also placed renewed focus on vaccination and disease surveillance. Public health experts generally regard immunisation as the most effective way to prevent measles outbreaks, while rapid identification of cases can help health authorities respond more quickly and limit transmission.

With 1,075 new patients reported in just one day, the latest figures suggest that the outbreak remains a serious concern. The continued loss of children, alongside the growing number of suspected infections, is likely to keep measles prevention, vaccination and access to timely healthcare high on the public health agenda.
