Pakistan’s Historic Collapse Seals West Indies Test Victory

Pakistan’s defeat against the West Indies was more than just another Test match result. The 91-run loss was a rare and emphatic victory for the Caribbean side, while a string of striking statistics highlighted the scale of Pakistan’s collapse and the significance of the result.

Chasing 211 in the fourth innings, Pakistan were bowled out for just 120. The defeat marked only the second time in their Test history that they had failed to chase a target of 211 or fewer against the West Indies. Their previous lower failed chase came in Bridgetown in 2017, when Pakistan were unable to overhaul a target of 188.

The result also underlined the West Indies’ recent improvement in Test cricket, although their overall record remains inconsistent. This was their second victory in their last 11 Tests. Their previous win came against Sri Lanka in their most recent series. Across those 11 matches, the West Indies had suffered seven defeats and drawn two, making this latest success particularly valuable as they seek greater consistency in the longest format.

Fast bowler Jayden Seales played a central role in the victory. He claimed his fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, delivering a decisive performance when Pakistan needed to be dismantled in the final innings. His achievement also carried historical significance for West Indies cricket. Since Jason Holder took six wickets against Bangladesh in Kingston in 2018, Seales became the first West Indies fast bowler to claim five wickets in a Test fourth innings on home soil.

Pakistan’s final total of 120 was another major statistical low point. It became their fifth-lowest fourth-innings score against the West Indies. Their four lower totals in such situations were 77 in Lahore in 1986, 81 in Bridgetown in 2017, 104 in Lahore in 1959 and 106 in Bridgetown in 1958. The latest collapse therefore placed the defeat among Pakistan’s poorest fourth-innings performances against the Caribbean side.

The match also produced a remarkable milestone in regional cricket. For the first time in the history of Test cricket in the Caribbean, all 40 wickets to fall in a match were taken by fast bowlers. Globally, such an occurrence had previously been recorded only five times, making the match an unusual showcase of pace bowling.

For Pakistan, the defeat extended a troubling sequence away from home. Since their Test victory in Sri Lanka in July 2023, they have now lost eight consecutive Tests outside Pakistan. It is the longest run of successive overseas Test defeats in their history, adding further pressure on a side struggling to reproduce its home form in foreign conditions.

The statistics tell a clear story. Pakistan were set a manageable target, but their batting line-up could not withstand sustained pressure from the West Indies pace attack. Seales’ five-wicket haul proved decisive, while the broader performance of the Caribbean bowlers ensured that the visitors never looked capable of completing the chase.

For the West Indies, the victory offers a timely boost. For Pakistan, however, the numbers expose a deeper concern: their struggles in overseas Test cricket are no longer an isolated problem but an increasingly persistent pattern.
